How and why women take control of the media and the digital space ?
Various international media(h)ac(k)tivists (*)

>> 23/01 -14h>18h- Salle:

Recently, a group of international women bumped on each other at several european meetings(**) of media(h)ac(k)tivism. This collision generated a general feeling of a strong “female spirit” at the heart of the media-activist movement. Is there also a different attitude of women towards media-activism ?

In a mediaworld dominated by a small elite, alternative media channels are becoming necessary tools for democratic control and a way to shape a better society based on peace and social justice. The neoliberal recipe of privatization that governments, institutions and mass-media propagate are more noxious to women than to men : more women than men work in public institutions and loose their job upon privatization; the more public services get privatized, the more these services (child care, health care, water distribution, schools) are thrown back into the busy hands of women. Through media-activism and alternative media channels the public realizes that official and commercial media are having a daily neoliberal 'good-news-show' and are silencing or distorting facts that disturb this mediashow.

To us, media-activism is not only important to break the dominant neoliberal power of a small elite on the mainstream media and the software production, it is also important to get as much men as women involved into this countermovement, so to eradicate male dominance in the new society that we all stand for.

We want to form a firm network to proceed on the domain of (women)(media)activism and the use of new technologies. Networking, independent information channels through internet and the use of free software are essential tools to fight against the dominant neoliberal system that through privatization and undemocratic decisions is making more victims among women than among men.

The exchange of experiences between international media-activists and the 200 participants of Digitales will undoubtedly encourage some of the present women to take up both media-activism and information technology in the struggle for the rights of women inside and outside Europe.
